Pieter de Vries ACS

I work in documentary, television and commercial production as well as the odd short film, and have shot these productions in many formats: 16 & 35mm film, Viper, Sony F23/35, Digital Betacam and Red camera systems.

I have worked with the Sony Corporation on the testing phases of new HD camera technology and with Canadian director James Cameron as topside cinematographer for the 3D Imax film, “Ghosts of the Abyss”, revisiting the wreck of the Titanic, using the Sony/Panavision 3D HiDef format. I am the owner of an Arriflex SR2 Super 16 camera and a Sony DVW-790WSP Digital Betacam.

In 1998 I was the DP on one of the first 3D for television video productions for German broadcaster ZDF. "3D Halloween" was filmed in Scotland using the Pulfrich 3D camera system with studio visual fx shot in Sydney Australia.

“RAT” was a co-production with National Geographic and Beyond Productions. For my work on this film I was awarded the Cinematographer of the Year Award at the 1998 Australian Cinematographers Society National Awards. My cinematography on this film additionally received an Emmy nomination in 1999.

I am regularly required to shoot for productions in overseas locations and from time to time, asked to join crews on the other side of the world. One of my more recent credits is the international co-production, ”Darwin’s Lost Paradise“, a two hour drama documentary following the journeys of Charles Darwin. Other credits include “Atlas - Australia Revealed”, part of The Discovery Channel’s largest ever HD project and “Lonely Planet - Six Degrees” a four part documentary series shot in Sydney, New York, Havana and Paris. “On Tour with the Queen” produced by Lion Television London is a series that retraces the 1953/54 tour of the Commonwealth by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip.

I am a writer on digital imaging technology and a regular contributor to publications such as MacWorld, Better Digital Camera, Content & Technology, Australian Cinematographer and a number of other photography and travel magazines. I am a regular guest speaker on cinematography and filmmaking  for P&O Cruises and offer support to a number of video camera clubs around Australia.
